Home Made Instruments

Making musical instruments is tricky, you want to go for something that has a good sound and not something that looks like it was made by a toddler. It is a very fine line, and it is best to get some advice. One simple instrument that can give a great sound is a hammer dulcimer. It is relatively easy and scalable project depending on your skill. The basic principle is to take guitar, or harp strings, tin boxes and a drill of some sort and create something that can either be played by strumming with a pick or played with a mallet.The first step is to find a box, the sound of the final instrument will depend on the size and shape of the box, as you are starting out, I would suggest finding the biggest one you can get your hands on. The next step is making wholes. The low tech solution is simply to tap through with a hammer an nail, if you have a craft drill, this is a great place to use it. Start with 4 to 8 holes on each side, use a ruler to make sure that the holes are directly opposite each other. Take the string, wrap it around a small piece of dowel and feed it through the hole to the other side, once it is through the other side wrap it around another piece of dowel. You will be able to ’tune'the instrument by twisting the piece of dowel. Once you have the basics you are ready to experiment.

Creative thinking with clothes at Oxfam

If there’s one place that you can always rely on for having decent second, third or fourth-hand clothes, it’s charity giant Oxfam — probably the greatest organisation in the world when it comes to shifting goods which aren’t new. Every time I go to my local one I’m astounded by the diversity on offer there — there is literally every kind of clothing on offer, including things which I have never seen anywhere else — and not once have I left that shop without at least one item (in fact, they should probably put a weight limit on their bags because it would be a very good deterrent for me!).

One thing which I once picked up – and this is no word of a lie – is an old vintage wedding suit . I made a killing with that beauty. Sold it to a groom-to-be for an amazing price which I will not divulge here (but I will say that it was plenty enough to buy, say, a decent MP3 player…). Nowhere other than Oxfam, believe me…

Egg art

When I was a child, I loved painting. I mean, I still love painting now as much as I ever did, but back then there was something really special and fresh and new about it. I put this down to it being so fresh and special and new. And the fact I was very young and was yet to learn the many ways of the world. This meant that I loved everything, from the sweet wrapper I might find on the pavement to the long-dead cat I might find behind my neighbour’s car (she really shouldn’t have been allowed a cat because this was how they always seemed to end up).

One thing which was a problem for my parents was this: I would paint on anything and everything. I would paint on walls, on the wood floor after rolling the carpet up, and even on any food that happened to be lying around. One of my major stomping grounds was the vegetable cupboard. One by one, every vegetable became a masterpiece in its own right.

But my most favourite of all the things to paint on, by far, were the eggs. Mainly because I loved seeing the look on my mother’s face after she opened the egg-box up and saw that I had painted all the eggs to look like all the American presidents!
